This fantasy novel is vaguely reminiscent of Cinderella. Lucinda Chapdelaine is an orphan who was taken in by her uncle and aunt after the death of her parents. The aunt has used her as a servant in the family's jewelry store. When her uncle dies, her aunt throws her out into the street.

Before that though, Lucinda has met the Amaranth Witch who is looking for a new setting for a very special jewel, a prince looking for a special gift for his intended bride, a thief named Peter who crashes into her garret and who steals the jewel, and a goat who behaves more like a dog.

Having nowhere to go after her aunt throws her out, she decides to find the witch to confess the loss of the jewel. The witch is a magical being from another world who has been stranded in Lucinda's. She needs Lucinda's help to recover the jewel. She plays the role of fairy godmother in the story but puts Lucinda in much more danger than Cinderella's godmother put Cinderella in.

Lucinda runs up against a villain who wants the jewel and who was instrumental in causing the death of her parents and who also stole their wealth leaving Lucinda a penniless orphan.

I liked the relationship Lucinda has with both Peter and the prince. This was an engaging tale that will enthrall teens and middle schoolers who want a combination of adventure and romance.

Lucinda has a happy childhood in a well to do family until a tragic accident takes the lives of her parents. When their finances unravel, she ends up living with her aunt and uncle in their jewelry shop. While her uncle loves her, her aunt treats her poorly and uses her as a servant. Lucinda's life begins to change when a strange woman brings an unusual jewel to the shop for repair of the setting and Lucinda also sees the prince as he visits their store looking for an engagement gift. When the woman is identified as the Amaranth Witch, her aunt insists the jewel be returned. Life then gets complicated for Lucinda when she makes the fateful decision to keep the jewel and have her uncle reset it in secret. A visit from a young thief and the death of her uncle set off a chain of events that lead Lucinda to be homeless. She finds a companion in a goat and makes her way to the Amaranth Witch who offers her a return to her former home in exchange for finding the missing jewel. With a possibly magic goat as a companion, this take on the Cinderella story has some interesting twists and turns and was an unusual but pleasant adaptation of the old tale, complete with royalty, hidden identities, tragic pasts, and of course, and evil villain.
he Amaranth Enchantment is a breathtakingly-fairytalesque story that I gobbled up in under 24 hours. Julie Berry's debut novel caught my attention while browsing with its understated cover and Victorian looking girl.

The inside flap sounded like my kinda book a dash of love story, a generous scoop of fairy-tale, sprinkling of magic, and a stronger than she realizes heroine.

Lucinda does not disappoint as she muddles through, rising to meet every adventure and misadventure.

The supporting cast are well-rounded with the mysterious possible witch (Beryl), the pickpocket with a devilishly disarming personality (Peter), the cruel step-aunt, and the playful dreamer with a good heart prince (Gregor). And of course there is Dog, the goat that becomes Lucinda's stanchest ally.

The plot is well crafted and I found the ending surprising. Everything tied together tightly and I had the oh-so-that's-what-that-meant moment.
The pacing is good with each chapter starting and ending with a hook that carries you through it and into the next chapter. I found myself reading until the wee hours last night.

This book is meant to be read a bit slower and savored. But the story moves at a nice pace.

The story was about friendship, family, fighting for yourself and those you love. And yes, there's a cute prince but we aren't forced to swoon over him for hundreds of pages.

It took me awhile to get around to this one. When I turned the last page, my first thought was that The Amaranth Enchantment was a Cinderella tale with a hint of the story of Anastasia Romanov (and of course, a paranormal element, as well). This was an easy read that wasn't overly involved, which is exactly what I needed this week with my limited time to read.

That said, I do think this book would have benefited from a little bit more detail to the plot and attention to the characters. I enjoyed the general story, but I felt like it had so much more potential than what we ultimately got. I would have loved to have seen more of Beryl and her involvement, not to mention some real development with Lucinda -- she fell rather flat to me. And I admit I had a bit of an eye roll moment when the story wrapped itself up at the end... It was a little too pretty and borderline ridiculous, though I admit I did have some suspicions about what kind of person Peter actually was.

Anyway, I still think The Amaranth Enchantment is a fun adaptation of the Cinderella story we all know and love. It will provide you with a great escape and you won't get too bogged down -- it's really a great read as we head into summer and vacation season.
