Gargoyles, witches, and werewolves...what more could a reader ask for? Poor Reese has a steep learning curve when a werewolf's bite gives her some sort of tattooed mark on her chest instead of turning her furry. Very quickly she learns she's a witch, courtesy of genes passed down through her mother's bloodline, and discovers the existence of all kinds of things you'd have thought only live in storybooks.I liked Reece's direct, no-nonsense character. One of the best things about her is the love and protectiveness she has for her two much younger half-siblings. I really wish something nasty would have gotten her stepfather. He deserved it. Trigger warning: domestic violence -- not graphic but clearly mentioned. Reece's stepfather doesn't hit his wife, but he hits his five-year-old daughter, Jenny. Every time he gets violent, eight-year-old Joseph, Jenny's older brother, calls Reese, and she runs to their rescue.
I think I would have liked the romance between Reese and Damian to be a little more developed, but it got pushed to the side in the midst of all the action: trying to protect Reese's family, learning about Reese's new powers, hunting rogue werewolves, taking in stray werewolves who need help. But it's a great plot, never a dull moment and unpredictable, so I can live with the romance being secondary.
Damian was a little too tentative for my tastes. It was obvious he liked Reece, but he didn't want to say anything because he thought she would choose someone else. He's a great guy though. I loved how he likes to cook and Reece doesn't, so he cooks for her. Whenever she calls him, he's there for her and he has her back. If I had to explain their relationship I would say Reece is the more alpha and he is her support.
The other supporting characters were great too and made for a well-balanced story. I did think there were too many rogue wolves to keep track of--a lot of different names and descriptions of wolves--but I did like that each wolf was distinctive (in wolf form) and could still be identified based on fur color and pelt patterns.
The only thing I might complain about is the fact that we never know how the rogue alpha gathered all the wolves in his pack. ***SPOILER*** How did he find out about the existence of werewolves, how did he know who to approach (since they look normal in human form) and how did he maintain control over them? ***END SPOILER***
Overall, I enjoyed this book and couldn't put it down till the end--luckily I started reading it on a Saturday morning! I hope there'll be another book after this. It seems possible, since people keep teasing Reece with mentions of "other" types of beings.

I had never read anything by Judith Post before this book. I was caught up in the character's so completely I forgot to make make dinner for the hubby!
The basis of the book is different than what I would have thought of.
I like the mix of witches, gargoyles, and werewolves.
I liked this story. It was a little different. Gargolyes are not that usual in paranormal books. He seemed a little more like an angle with a twist. I enjoyed reading it and would read a sequel to it.
It was interesting seeing how Reece's powers grew. Damian has a wonderful loving personality but can still destroy multiple shifters at once. Reece's brother and sister are really cute. The secondary characters were great too. I didn't think they'd ever find out who the rogue alpha was either.

4 stars
Wolf's Bane brought to me a different view of the paranormal world by bringing in new species like gargoyles & mixing them in with witches, werewolves & hints at "others." It gave me all the things I want in a good story like romance, intrigue, & mystery while mixing old/new world mindsets with a dash of serial killer just for spice. It was It gave just a touch of sexual without being explicit, which I found refreshing. Looking forward to the next installment.

This is a really enjoyable book. It has a really interesting plot, well-done characters, and just enough humor to to add some sparkle to the drama. There are moments for laughter and for tears. My only criticism is the author's perpetuation of the Hollywood-created idea that a Warlock is a male witch. While this was irritating in the old Bewitched TV series, at least it was corrected in Charmed. A Warlock is an oath-breaker, and can be male or female. A witch can be either male or female...indeed, the earliest use of the term "witch" was originally applied to men. But that is a rather small quibble...once I got past that misuse of the term, I really did enjoy the book. I look forward to reading more from this author.
"Wolf's Bane" is an enjoyable read with action, suspense and a little romance. It has the usual cast of characters for a paranormal romance, witches and werewolves, but with an interesting twist, a gargoyle. Who knew a gargoyle could be so yummy? This is my first time reading a story with a gargoyle as the main character but it won't be my last.
Reece is a martial arts teacher who is constantly called by her younger brother and sister to rescue them from their abusive father. On one such mission, Reece encounters a young man who changes into a werewolf before her eyes. Before she can comprehend what is happening, the werewolf has attacked her. A mysterious winged man comes to her rescue, but Reece's life will never be the same. Damian, a gargoyle, will open Reece's eyes to a world she didn't know existed much less a part of. They will have to learn to work together to save the city from rogue werewolves.
I enjoy Judith Post's style of writing, and this was no exception. She does a great job of developing each character. Reece is a strong character, who was thrown into a difficult and dangerous situation, but didn't let it change who she is. Damian is a guardian. His mission is to save others. I like how they learned to work together. I enjoyed this read and look forward to the next installment.
