Echo An Alien Apocalyptic Saga Species Intervention #6609 Series Book 2 eBook JK Accinni

Aliens, dystopia, and a look at the year 2033 make "Echo: An Alien Apocalyptic series" by J.K. Accinni" stand out from the crowd. The level of violence and abuse woven in with history and politics and may be confounding, but the three books of this series that I have read place it squarely in the bucket once called "cautionary tale" -- or would, if the aliens were worse than the humans. Even religion gets a few spanks on its collective bottom in this one. Depending on your agility of mind, you might be able to dive right into this middle book of the series from which Echo springs. But remember, you have been warned: this is a five-star read for any connoisseur of post-apocalyptic tales, but heavier handed than readers not steeped in the abuse that is a hallmark of this genre might wish.

Echo An Alien Apocalyptic Saga Species Intervention #6609 Series Book 2 eBook JK Accinni Reviews

Baby's offspring Echo has been waiting over a hundred years for the right time to emerge and complete her mission.

America of 2033 is a dismal place. Aside from a few enclaves inhabited by the super-wealthy, most people live in tenements. Sickness is rampant, particularly polio, and vaccines are not readily available.

Scotty, his sister Abby and their mom are quite poor. Abby suffers from kidney disease and the little money the family has goes towards the cost of dialysis.

Scotty discovers Echo who is intrigued by him, although she thinks he is too young for her purposes. When Scotty takes a nasty fall, Echo heals him, beginning the physical transformations experienced 100 years ago by Netty and Wil. Several years later, after the death of his mom, Scotty returns to the woods and finds Echo talking to his best friend Jose. Jose is an orphan from Mexico whose parents and sister were murdered. A friend brought him to America for adoption but then disappeared. His adopted family shared the apartment with Scotty’s family until the death of Scotty and Abby’s mom. Now only Jose lives with them. Jose and eventually Abby are healed and undergoing the same physical changes as Scotty which makes him feel less isolated.

Echo returns home with Scotty and Jose and she is soon a member of the family, who loves them all, especially Barney the dog. She somehow materializes gold and diamonds which solve their money problems. They enlist the aid of Peter, a lawyer who acts as a business manager. They move to one of the nice areas left in America; an enclave for the rich in Florida. Jose and Abby become lovers.

There are a lot of bad guys in the book, but 3 really stand out. They delight in kidnapping women, raping and torturing them before killing them in a horrible way. Like the first book in the series, there is a lot of sexual violence and rape integral to the story. Perhaps the author feels that these vile acts are the best way to demonstrate the evils of man.

Kelly is a knife wielding maniac who loves to torture her victims. Her brother, Armoni is even worse than her. They are also the victims of an abusive father and have an incestuous relationship. Jose’s stepbrother Tomas rounds out the trio. They go to Scotty’s house with evil intentions. Echo saves saves the day by killing Thomas and Kelly. Armoni escapes and in the process discovers and steals some of their gold. He vows revenge.

Omar is another bad guy introduced in the story. He is a Moslem running for president as a moderate, but he has secret deep ties to the Salafis, the most radical branch of the Moslem Brotherhood. They hate America and yearn for its destruction. Although married, he has a mistress named Lita who (unbeknownst to him) works for the CIA (in a horrible but vital assignment). Omar and his wife had a baby who died from polio. His wife went crazy after that, so he had his henchmen kidnap another baby whom he passes off as his own..

The book ends with Echo telling Scotty exactly what her mission is. It is not a surprise, but it was cruel to end the book at this point!

I immediately bought the remaining books in the series. I can’t wait to find out what happens in the 3rd book, and will start it today.
After having read the first book in this series awhile ago, and due to some things that bugged me about the first book, I wasn’t really eager to start on the second book. I’d thought I’d wait awhile before reading Echo for fear that the same issues that bothered me in Baby, would pop up again in Echo. Alas, my fears were unnecessary and I ended up enjoying Echo far more than I did Baby.

I was so focused on the issues that plagued me in the first book, I failed to notice how exquisitely J.K. Accinni writes. Reading Echo, the first thing that stood out to me was the complexity of the plot with political intrigue intricately woven into a story about the world - more specifically America - in 2033, and the cruelty and inhumanity people show to nature and each other; destroying our planet and ourselves through greed and brutality. The author uses many metaphors by means of three-dimensional characters and a super-intelligent furry alien, to show how the human race is the engineer of its own destruction.

One scene early in the book really grabbed my attention as it struck a chord with me. “Whatever you need there is a government program to cover the cost. Cradle to grave, as they say. Yet the poor somehow always found the money for air conditioning, cell phones, I-pods, cable TV, shiny leased automobiles, and LED TVs.” To be very honest, this is something I’m always questioning in my daily life. How do the poorest of the poor manage to have more of life’s luxuries than so many others who struggle to afford daily necessities to just survive? Questions challenging the morals of the human race applicable to our lives today, and even more so in a world twenty years from now crippled by the Polio virus and a defective government, lends a sense of realism to this story which is sure to touch a raw nerve or two. Of course, I was also immensely thrilled that my home country got a mention later on in the book!

I think one of the scenes that will linger in my mind for quite some time is the scene in which a seventeen-year old girl is raped, tortured and murdered in the most horrendous and shocking of ways reminiscent of the movies The Hills Have Eyes and Wrong Turn. Kudos to the author for being so brutally honest and not shying away from the terrifying darkness a human mind is capable of. From incest to dog fighting and poaching, to the stark reality of corrupt figures of authority and the possibility of the East overthrowing the West, Echo is an intelligently-written story that will make you think, but at the same time shock you at the repulsiveness of some of its characters, while rooting for the unlikely heroes. The backdrop for this story is so realistic it made me feel as though this is a very likely future for the world as we know it. The good guys in this story don’t have it easy at all and the villains are such vile creatures, their punishment weren’t nearly as severe as the atrocious deeds they committed.

In my opinion Echo is a vast improvement on Baby, and I’m genuinely looking forward to reading Armageddon Cometh, the third book in this intriguing and exhilarating series.
