About That Kiss A Heartbreaker Bay Novel Jill Shalvis 9780062741776 Books
Jill Shalvis is always able to deliver a well written story. Her characters are complex creatures and human just like the rest of us.This time around in Heartbreaker Bay, we get Kylie and Joe's story. Kylie has a very much non-traditional career as a woodworker and creator of wonderful furniture that are pieces of art. (And yes, I was thrilled to see a character who works with their hands creating art.) Kylie has some things that have happened to her in her past that she has blocked out involving her Grandfather's death. Her grandfather was the one who taught her how to create using tools and wood and to explore the artist in her mind. Kylie can normally be found covered in sawdust and wearing jeans and a t-shirt which are definitely not sexy catch a guy's eye.
Joe is all alpha male and "I am take charge" type of guy. His background is a bit murky but he is ex-special forces. His current career is in security working for Archer's security company. All black ops and always on call. But there is something about Kylie that calls to Joe. And it is not that he wants her to make him a special piece for his sister's birthday.
The relationship between Kylie and Joe is fun to watch as it progress and the sparks fly. Joe helps Kylie with some issues that tie back to her grandfather's death and he quickly learns, he is not in control of things like he is used to being.
This book is a fun read like any book by Ms. Shalvis. I am hoping for a nice snow day soon so I can curl up on the couch and re-read it.
I was provided an advanced copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for a fair unbiased review. Although I always pre-order her books since I read them.

My Review of “About That Kiss” by Jill Shalvis
“About That Kiss ” by Jill Shalvis is a delightful, charming, romantic story with a touch of mystery. Jill Shalvis describes her colorful quirky characters as flawed, complicated and sometimes complex. Then again, do you know anyone that is perfect?
Is it nice for a gentleman to kiss and tell? In this story, after Joe an alpha type of guy kisses Kylie on an un-gentlemanly way, it’s a good thing Kylie didn’t hold her breath waiting for Joe to call. Kylie is a talented wood-crafter, learned from her late grandfather who taught her how to make creative things. Kylie’s parents were too young to raise her, and that job fell to her grandfather. Joe also comes from a dysfunctional family where his father is suffering from PSTD, and locks the doors to the house at least 5 times. Joe helps take care of his sister and father. Joe now works for a security company that can handle difficult situations.
Kylie sees Joe at work, and they tease each other. Unfortunately something priceless and meaningful to Kylie has been stolen. After getting letters with pictures, Kalie turns to Joe to help her. Both are working together trying to make the pieces of the puzzles fit.
Working so closely is becoming a problem, since both Kylie and Joe can’t forget that kiss. Perhaps trying again, will make them forget, or remember?
I appreciate that Jill Shalvis brings up the problems of PSTD, and how difficult it is for the person and the family. There should be more help available.
I would recommend this novel for readers that enjoy a romantic story. Happy Reading !
I took a break from Jill Shalvis books -- I used to love them and then the heroines all started having I Love Lucy type moments which irritated me and ruined the stories. This one is a slight improvement but we still have a heroine who doesn't get the dangers, and silly situations where the H/h are in danger and yet all they are focusing on is their lust (in a closet with the property owner but feet away? Come on!) It just doesn't ring real and it certainly didn't do much to build up the chemistry between them (from the readers' perspective.) If it was a romantic comedy it was not that amusing, if it was a thriller it was not that thrilling -- it just felt light and superficial all the way around.
I didn't believe the romance and I didn't believe the "suspense" aspect of this story and soon I was only reading cause I am usually compelled to finish something I start.
Finally, where were the editors? Did anyone read it for consistency? I'm guessing not or I wouldn't be constantly drawn out of the story by things like wondering how he got her tight jeans off but left her boots on? Or where the dog went? Things like that. I don't remember this being a problem in previous Shalvis books. And I know it is just a nitpick but I do wish this author would stop referring to "lady parts". It sounds so sophomoric.
If you're a Shalvis fan you will probably find this one okay. I'm going to be giving further books in this series a miss.
